I have been writing here about the municipal election in my city, which comes to a close on the actual Voting Day of October 26. Another election will happen on the following day; Israel holds the election for members of its Knesset, the Westminster-style parliament which governs the country, on October 27.

I have read relatively little about that looming election, but it does appear that there is a good chance that Benjamin Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister, will find it difficult to put together a ruling coalition that will keep him in office afterward. Yet, the elections are proceeding as scheduled. The WSJ ran a story on Gadi Eisenkot, who the WSJ thinks is likely to replace Netanyahu if he cannot retain his position.

You may or may not know that last year the Carney government chose to do something it had not previously been willing to do: it recognized Palestine as a State. It did, however, say that recognition was predicated on certain conditions, one of those being that a general election be held by The Palestinian Authority in 2026.

Well, the President of the Palestinian Authority has announced that the elections for the legislature and for, yes, President, scheduled for this November, will be postponed to September 2027.  President Mahmoud Abbas has been President since 2005, so those elections have been, um, ‘postponed’ many times over the last 21 years.

Mahmoud Abbas, President, Palestinian Authority:

Never fear, Global Affairs Canada is ‘calling on’ the Palestinian Authority to reverse its president’s announcement to postpone elections.

Yea, Global Affairs Canada. You tell ‘em. Then have a chat with that Xi Jinping guy. President of China since 2013.
